Important Announcement Regarding Dual Language Programs:
This year, there has been a change in how students will be placed in dual language programs. In accordance with New York State Education Commissioner's Regulations Part 154, the process for newly enrolled ELL students requires districts to complete the identification process before an ELL student receives a final school placement.
Parents may enroll their child in a dual language program where approximately 50% of the students are English proficient and approximately 50% are identified as English language learners. This program is the parents' choice, coupled with program availability which determines program placement. All students will be interviewed by a pedagogue at the school level. Students who speak a language other than English will be administered the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL) to determine eligibility.
Families interested in dual language programs are encouraged to apply to schools that have offered or anticipate offering a dual language program in 2015-16 . All families who apply by the February 18, 2015 deadline will receive an offer in April to a school. Schools will then assess incoming kindergarten students for eligibility to participate in the program and make a final determination about program placement.
**Please note that there is no longer an option to list dual language programs on the kindergarten application, but there is a question to assess your interest, should your child be found eligible. Eligibility for the program is based on status as an English Language Learner, and where there is seat availability, English-speaking children can also be accommodated. Families whose children may be English Language Learners are also encouraged to review information on ELL programs and parent choice .
